Summer Activities for Kids
Summer is the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy some fun activities with your kids. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Go on a treasure hunt: Hide small items around your yard or neighborhood and give your kids a list of things to find. Make it more challenging by setting a time limit or providing only clues rather than the actual location.
- Have a picnic: Spread out a blanket in your backyard or at a nearby park and enjoy a leisurely lunch in the summer sun. Add some games or outdoor toys to keep the kids entertained.
- Visit a farmer’s market: Support local businesses and get fresh, seasonal produce at the same time. Kids will love picking out their favorite fruits and vegetables, and they may even try something new.
- Go stargazing: Take advantage of clear summer nights by lying on the grass and looking up at the stars. See how many constellations you can spot or make up your own stories about the patterns you see.
- Play in the sprinklers: Set up a sprinkler in your yard and let the kids run through it to cool off on hot summer days. This is a great activity for younger kids who don’t yet know how
A Printable To Keep You Going
Summer is almost here! While many of my friends’ kids in the US are already out of school, we have another few weeks. As always, I want to get out and do more this summer instead of just sitting at home. We love this printable chock full of fun things to do in the summer.
Lots of our blanks will be checked off while we visit some of our favourite summer places to visit in Central Alberta but I’ve made the printable work for people living anywhere! Now let’s see how many we can check off before September. Who’s with me?

What are your “must do” items this summer? I tried to keep the BINGO card relatively generic so everyone could do it (ie no “going to the ocean” or “ride on the boat”) but interesting enough that it might get you out of your normal summertime rut.
Sometimes Less is More
And remember, you don’t have to do something out and about every day. Summer is about more than DOING. It is also about resting and reconnecting with your family. So don’t make your “to do” list unachievable. Easy can be fun too! And kids love an ice cream or a Slurpee just as much as they like going somewhere big.
Need summer fun supplies? We have a few suggestions for you.
- Evan loves this bug gun for going on bug hunts. It sucks them up with a vacuum and then you can put them in a jar or habitat case.
- Take your bubbles to the next level with this giant bubble wand kit.
- Evan had so much fun fishing when we were on our RV trip. A kids fishing rod is inexpensive and hours of summer fun.
- There are loads of summer books for every level of reader. I find that it’s great to have books on hand when the inclination strikes. We also love to visit our library.
- Kids love collecting stuff! Keep it all together (and not strewn across your house) by getting them their very own collection kit. You can start small with a small plastic box with dividers or go big with a tackle box. Make sure to add a brush, tweezers and a magnifying glass for extra collecting fun!
